I am a bilingual songwriter and harpist from Aberystwyth. My debut album Week of Pines won the Welsh Music Prize in 2013 and was nominated for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. I have performed across the world, and continue to write and record.
I believe that songwriting is a vital and fun tool for self-expression, and can be applied to any subject for imaginative and rewarding learning. From history to mathematics, it has been proved that music can offer a new perspective on core subjects. You can write a song about anything! Enriching for all levels of musical ability, it gives confidence. Improvisation and the exploration of lyrics and symbols is something everyone can benefit from; songs can offer such a wonderful insight into the minds of our young people.
I am particularly interested in working within the folk and traditional idiom to gain fresh insight into our Welsh heritage and traditions, but also to apply those to our modern experience. It took me years to find the confidence to write my own songs, and I only wish I had been able to engage with practicing artists as a child and young person in school.
